Multiply by 9, divide by 5, add 32. That is the entire conversion: F = C × 9/5 + 32. So 20 °C is 68 °F, 30 °C is 86 °F, and 100 °C is 212 °F. To come back, undo it in reverse order — subtract 32 first, then multiply by 5/9 — which makes 98.6 °F exactly 37 °C.
Without a calculator: double the Celsius figure, take a tenth off the result, add 32. That looks like an estimate and is not one. 24 °C doubles to 48, less 4.8 is 43.2, plus 32 is 75.2 °F — the same answer the formula gives.
Why does the formula need two steps?
The two scales disagree about two separate things, and each disagreement costs one operation.
They disagree about how big a degree is. Between the freezing and boiling points of water there are 100 Celsius degrees and 180 Fahrenheit degrees — 32 °F to 212 °F. That ratio, 180 over 100, is where the 9/5 comes from. A Fahrenheit degree is a smaller step.
They also disagree about where to put zero. Celsius parks zero at the freezing point of water. Fahrenheit sits 32 degrees below it. The usual account is that Fahrenheit fixed his zero at the coldest temperature he could reliably reproduce in a workshop — a slush of ice, water and ammonium chloride — and put the human body near 96, a number that halves cleanly four times. Celsius published his scale in 1742 running the other way round, with 0 for boiling and 100 for freezing. It was turned upside down within a few years of his death in 1744, though who did it first is still argued over.
Two disagreements, two steps. This is what makes temperature the awkward one: kilometres to miles, kilograms to pounds and litres to gallons are all a single multiplication, which is why the general unit converter can treat them as one family and temperature needs its own box.
How do you convert Celsius to Fahrenheit in your head?
The shortcut that is exactly right
Double it, take off 10%, add 32.
Doubling gives 2×. Taking a tenth off that leaves 1.8×, and 1.8 is 9/5, so the shortcut is the formula rather than an approximation of it. Take 28 °C: double to 56, minus 5.6 is 50.4, plus 32 is 82.4 °F. The subtraction is the only awkward step.
The one everybody actually uses
Double it and add 30. Faster, and wrong by an amount you can predict: the estimate misses the truth by one fifth of the Celsius figure minus two. It is dead accurate at 10 °C (50 °F), reads low below that and high above it, by a degree for every five you move.

For deciding what jacket to wear, two to four degrees of slop is invisible. For anything where the number is the point — a recipe, a temperature someone read off a thermometer, a spec sheet with a tolerance on it — it is not good enough, and the arithmetic is slower than typing it into a converter that shows all four scales at once anyway.
Backwards, the same shortcut is subtract 30 and halve. It is exact at 50 °F and drifts the same way: 90 °F comes out as 30 °C against a true 32.2 °C.
Which conversions are worth memorising?
Most day-to-day converting is one of about ten numbers. Learn these and you rarely need the formula for weather at all.

Two of those are worth a second look. -40 is the same number on both scales, which falls straight out of the algebra — set C equal to its own conversion and there is exactly one solution. And 98.6 °F is precise only by accident. It is 37 °C converted, 37 being a rounded nineteenth-century average, so the decimal comes from the arithmetic and not from anyone's thermometer. Normal varies with the person, the time of day and where the reading was taken.

Does a change in temperature convert the same way?
No, and this is the mistake that survives into published work. A temperature is a point on a scale. A change is the distance between two points, and a distance does not care where either scale put its zero.
So a difference takes the 9/5 factor alone and no offset. A forecast promising 10 degrees Celsius warmer means 18 degrees Fahrenheit warmer; push that 10 through the full formula and you get 50, a heatwave instead of a pleasant afternoon.
The same goes for tolerances, spans and anything phrased as "per degree". A device rated to swing ±2 °C is rated to ±3.6 °F, where the full formula would report ±35.6 — a number that is not a tolerance at all. Converters, this site's included, convert points rather than intervals, so nothing will stop you doing it wrong. That multiplication is yours.
Why do oven charts say 350 °F for 180 °C?
Because the chart is not converting anything. 180 °C really is 356 °F. The 350 comes from British gas marks, which were only ever defined in Fahrenheit: mark n is 250 + 25n degrees, landing on 275, 300, 325, 350 and up in clean steps. The Celsius column beside them — on any chart, the one in this site's converter included — is each of those Fahrenheit figures rounded to a number an oven dial can show.
That rounding is why the Celsius side looks lumpy — 140, 150, 170, 180, with 160 skipped entirely. Gas mark 6 is 400 °F, which is 204.4 °C, and the charts print 200. Gas mark 3 is 325 °F, or 162.8 °C, and the charts print 170: about seven degrees adrift, the widest gap in the table. Nothing roasting will notice. A recipe with a narrow margin will, so convert the Fahrenheit figure yourself rather than trusting the printed Celsius one.
Fan ovens are an adjustment, not a conversion. The common advice is to set 20 °C below what a conventional recipe asks, because moving air carries heat to the food faster; some manufacturers print 25 instead. Neither number is physics, and domestic thermostats miss their set point often enough that an oven thermometer settles more arguments than any chart.
How does Kelvin fit in?
Kelvin borrows Celsius-sized degrees and moves zero down to absolute zero, so the conversion is a single addition: 273.15. Water freezes at 273.15 K and boils at 373.15 K. Write it with no degree sign and say it with no "degrees" — 300 K is three hundred kelvin, and the older "degrees Kelvin" has been wrong since the unit was renamed in 1968.
What is not a conversion: wind chill, heat index and whatever an app labels "feels like". Those are models that fold in wind speed or humidity, and different national weather agencies use different ones, so two apps can disagree about the same afternoon. No arithmetic on a Celsius reading will produce them.
